Tooth tartar or calculus often does not cause physical symptoms or complaints, so many people do not realize that there is tartar in their mouth.

Even though it doesn’t cause symptoms, untreated and treated tartar can cause several dental and gum health problems , such as gingivitis, tooth decay, or even loss of teeth.

Therefore, we first need to know what causes tartar and how to prevent it. The following are the causes of tartar:

1. Poorly maintained oral and dental hygiene, for example, rarely brushing teeth or not flossing.

2. The habit of consuming foods or drinks that contain lots of sugar, such as candy, milk, packaged drinks, and cakes.

3. Smoking habits and consuming alcoholic beverages.

4. Dry mouth, for example due to side effects of drugs, autoimmune diseases, or thyroid disorders

The following are efforts to prevent tartar:

1. Brush your teeth regularly

Brush your teeth regularly 2 times a day for 2 minutes, by brushing your teeth properly. Make sure the back surface of your teeth and molars is within reach when brushing your teeth.

When brushing your teeth, use toothpaste that contains fluoride and brush your teeth with soft bristles. Try to reach all areas between your teeth and mouth.

2. Use dental floss and mouthwash

Also floss your teeth at least once a day after brushing your teeth. This aims to remove plaque and food debris between the teeth that may still be left behind because they are difficult to reach by a toothbrush.

After that, rinse your mouth with mouthwash to clean your teeth and mouth, and eradicate the bacteria that cause plaque and tartar appearance. In order not to irritate the gums and mouth, you can use a mouthwash that is alcohol-free or contains essential oils.

3. Reduce consumption of sugar

It has been previously mentioned that the bacteria that cause plaque develop due to the consumption of foods or drinks that contain lots of sugar. To control plaque buildup, limit your consumption of sweet foods and increase your consumption of balanced nutritious foods.

4. Drink enough white water

It is recommended that you drink 8 glasses or about 2 liters of water every day. White water functions to lift bacteria and dirt in the mouth which can lead to plaque buildup that causes tartar. In addition, drinking enough water every day also prevents you from dry mouth which can damage your teeth.

5. Avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks

As much as possible, stay away from cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. The reason is, these bad habits can increase the risk of dental and oral health problems, including the formation of tartar.
