Google provides an updated Google Maps application . Now users can choose a travel route, especially for cyclists . By utilizing a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm technology and crowdsourced data , Google Maps can now present cycling routes that are claimed to be safe and friendly for cyclists.

The cycling route will appear after the user selects a destination and presses the Direction button. A bicycle menu will be presented in the top row, along with route menus for cars, public transport, and pedestrians.

When this news was broadcast, KompasTekno had not found this feature on Google Maps (version 10.53.1) in Indonesia.

It is not yet known how complete the route that was successfully presented by Google Maps, but reportedly this update only includes new routes that are scattered in a number of major cities in the world. In certain cities, Google Maps is even able to provide information regarding bicycle rental places.

As a result, users can easily rent and drive by bicycle. The presence of this update is in line with the increase in cycling activity that has occurred in recent times. Recently, cycling has become a sporting trend that is popular with people in many countries, including Indonesia.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began in February, Google has recorded an increase in the number of bicycle users, which has increased by almost 69 percent.

Google Maps product manager, Vishal Dutta, said that Google has always provided support to cyclists who were active during the Covid-19 pandemic. “We aim to facilitate access for cyclists, both when traveling to the office or just exercising during the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Dutta as compiled by KompasTekno from Gizchina , Wednesday (28/10/2020).

To keep the bike in order to stay up-to-date with changes in the location, such as lane widening in a city, Google invites local governments to share geographic data its territory through tools provided.
